Height variables in the Abelian sandpile model: scaling fields and correlations

Résumé:
|
We compute the lattice 1-site probabilities, on the upper half-plane, of the four height
variables in the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model. We find their exact
scaling form when the insertion point is far from the boundary, and
when the boundary is either open or closed. Comparing with the predictions of
a logarithmic conformal theory with central charge $c=-2$, we find a full
compatibility with the following field assignments: the heights 2, 3 and 4 behave like
(an unusual realization of) the logarithmic partner of a primary field with scaling
dimension 2, the primary field itself being associated with the height 1 variable.
Finite size corrections are also computed and successfully compared with numerical
simulations. Relying on these field assignments, we formulate a conjecture for the scaling
form of the lattice 2-point correlations of the height variables on the plane,
which remain as yet unknown. The way conformal invariance is realized in this system
points to a local field theory with $c=-2$ which is different from the triplet theory.

Partial *-algebras, a tool for the mathematical description of physical systems?

Résumé:
|
We review the main steps in the development of partial *-algebras. First we discuss the algebraic structure stemming from the partial multiplication. Then we study in some detail the locally convex partial *-algebras, in particular, the Banach partial *-algebras, and we describe a number of concrete examples.
Next we consider the partial *-algebras s of closable operators in Hilbert spaces (partial O*-algebras), with a special emphasis on their *-automorphisms. Finally we sketch the representation theory of abstract partial *-algebras and give some instances of possible physical applications.

Résumé:
|
Consider two partial *-algebras $A_{1}$ and $A_{2}$ and a *-homomorphism $Phi$ from $A_{1}$ into $A_{2}$. Given a biweight $varphi$ on $A_{2}$, we discuss conditions under which the natural composition $varph circ Phi$ of $vp$ and $Phi$ is a biweight on
$A_{1}$. In particular, we examine whether the restriction of a biweight to a partial *-subalgebra is again a biweight.

Résumé:
|
A Banach partial *-algebra is a locally convex partial *-algebra whose total space is a Banach space.
A Banach partial *-algebra is said to be of type (B) if it possesses a generating family of
multiplier spaces that are also Banach spaces. We describe the basic properties of such objects and display a number ofexamples, namely $L^p$-like function spaces and spaces of operators on Hilbert scales.

A new look at an old mass relation

Résumé:
|
New data from neutrino oscillation experiments motivate us to extend a successful mass relation for the charged leptons to the other fundamental fermions. This new universal relation requires a Dirac mass around 3 10^{-2} eV for the lightest neutrino and rules out a maximal atmospheric mixing. It also suggests a specific decomposition of the CKM mixing matrix.
