Logarithmic scaling for height variables in the Abelian sandpile model
|

Phys. Lett. B 607 (2005) 188-196
|
|
Résumé:
|
We report on the exact computation of the scaling form of the 1-point function, on the
upper-half plane, of the height 2 variable in the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model.
By comparing the open versus the closed boundary condition, we find that the scaling field
associated to the height 2 is a logarithmic scalar field of scaling dimension 2, belonging
to a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory. This identification is confirmed by numerical
simulations and extended to the height 3 and 4 variables, which exhibit the same scaling
form. Using the conformal setting, we make precise proposals for the bulk 2-point
functions of all height variables.

Résumé:

We reconcile the $1/N_c$ expansion with the observed $eta-eta'$ mass spectrum. The chiral corrections introduced for that purpose are natural and consistent with the octet-singlet mixing angle $theta=-(22pm 1)^{circ}$ extracted from phenomenology in the large $N_c$ limit.

Boundary height fields in the Abelian sandpile model

Résumé:
|
We study the abelian sandpile model on the upper-half plane, and reconsider the correlations of the four height variables lying on the boundary. For more convenience, we carry out the analysis in the dissipative (massive) extension of the model and identify the boundary scaling fields corresponding to the four heights. We find that they all can be accounted for by the massive pertubation of a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory.

Résumé:
|
A Nordtvedt effect at cosmological scales affects the acoustic oscillations imprinted in the cosmic microwave background. The it{graviational baryonic mass density} of the universe is inferred at the first peak scale from WMAP data. The independent determination of the it{inertial baryonic mass density} through the measurement of the deuterium abundance in the framework of standard big bang nucleosynthesis leads to a new constraint on a possible violation of the strong equivalence principle at the recombination time.

Résumé:
|
We consider the unoriented two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model on the
half-plane with open and closed boundary conditions, and relate it to the
boundary logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge c=-2. Building on
previous results, we first perform a complementary lattice analysis of the operator
effecting the change of boundary condition between open and closed, which
confirms that this operator is a weight -1/8 boundary primary field, whose
fusion agrees with lattice calculations. We then consider the operators
corresponding to the unit height variable and to a mass insertion at an isolated site of
the upper half plane and compute their one-point functions in presence of a boundary
containing the two kinds of boundary conditions. We show that the scaling limit of the
mass insertion operator is a weight zero logarithmic field.

We study the effect of a violation of the strong equivalence principle (SEP) on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Such a violation would modify the weight of baryons in the primordial gravitational potentials and hence their impact in the establishment of the photon-baryon plasma acoustic oscillations before recombination....

Résumé:
|
In this paper we exploit the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the sphere introduced by Antoine and Vandergheynst
to build the associated Discrete Wavelet Frames. We first explore half-continuous frames, i.e, frames where the position remains
a continuous variable, and then move on to a fully discrete theory. This forces us to introduce the notion of controlled frames,
which reflects the particular nature of the underlying theory, particularly the apparent conflict between dilation and the compacity
of the $S^2$ manifold. We conclude with some numerical illustrations and future work.

Résumé:
|
During the last ten years, many techniques have been devised to add directionality in image processing. We may cite,
for instance, directional wavelets, steerable filters, curvelets, contourlets, \ldots. This has opened the door to new ways for efficiently
representing objects by oriented atoms. Real images, however, contain more than just smooth curves and straight lines defining
contours of objects. They can present also details that are less oriented and more isotropic (like corners, spots, texture elements,
\ldots). We present in this paper a tool which can be tuned relatively to these image features by decomposing them into a
(linear) frame of directional wavelets with variable angular selectivity. To obtain such a decomposition, these new functions
exploit some particularities of the (biorthogonal) circular multiresolution framework in the frequency domain. This link
suggests the name of our method, `multiselectivity analysis'.

Résumé:

We consider the flavor-changing operators associated with the strong axial and trace anomalies. Their short-distance generation through penguinlike diagrams is obtained within the QCD external field formalism. Standard-model operator evolution exhibits a suppression of anomalous effects in K and B hadronic weak decays. A genuine set of dimension-eight $\Delta S = 1$ operators is also displayed.

We review the main points in the development of partial *-algebras during the last 20

the partial multiplication;
(ii) The locally convex *-algebras; (iii) The *-algebras of closable operators in
Hilbert spaces or partial *-algebras, including the representation theory of the abstract *-algebras.
